HISTORY OF THE SUSSEX FLAG

Sussex has always been known as one single county. However, it was administratively divided up in 1585, which has led to some confusion about its status as a county. In 1889 the division was further cemented by the creation of two county councils – one situated in the east and one in the west. Hampshire and Kent have always had distinctive arms which further confuses the issue.

The flag of Sussex was created to represent the unity of a county which is sometimes muddied by various historical divisions that have taken place there. The official flag features six golden martlets on a field of royal blue and is the same design as the Sussex emblem. Each martlet represents one of the six subdivisions of the county of Sussex.

USAGE OF THE SUSSEX FLAG

The first recorded use of the Sussex emblem was in 1611 when cartographer John Speed deployed it to represent the Kingdom of the South Saxons. Since it was officially registered as the flag of Sussex in 2011, it has been used throughout the county. In 1969, elements of the Sussex emblem were utilised for the Sussex Police Authority when they were granted arms. Similarly, the Sussex County Cricket Club uses the traditional county arms as its badge. The flag of Sussex helps bring unity to a county that has historically been divided. Celebrate this union by flying the Sussex windsock today.
