HISTORY OF THE WESSEX FLAG

The design of the Wessex flag originates from the ancient West Saxon standard which was carried into battle until the 15th century. The flag features a gold dragon on a vibrant red field and is often thought to be considered England’s first national flag. It was taken into battle in wars against Mercians, Vikings and Normans. In battle, dragons were a symbol of fear and strength, they have deep roots in ancient Roman, Celtic, and Germanic culture.

The gold dragon of the West Saxons is thought to be one of the few surviving emblems from the time of the Saxon kingdoms.
