Geographic location of the Ascension Islands

Geographically, these islands are isolated volcanic islands off the coast of Brazil. They are about 1k miles from the coast of Africa and 1.4k miles from the coast of Brazil. On that note, these islands were named after the day of its recorded discovery ‘Ascension of Jesus’. Additionally, these islands were historically an important safe haven as a coaling station for mariners.

The main island of the Ascension Islands is around 88km. Additionally, a large percentage of the island is actually a wasteland of lava flows and cinder cones. 44 distinct craters have been identified.

These islands have approximately 800 residents making it a very small populace. However, there are no indigenous communities on the Ascension Islands therefore this population is made up of employees of the organisation operating on the islands.
