History of the Flag

The Black Country is a region that may be found in England’s West Midlands, to the north and west of Birmingham. With the introduction of coal mines, iron foundries, and steel mills, the area quickly gained prominence as one of the most industrialised in Britain during the era of the Industrial Revolution. The design of the flag was inspired by a remark made by Elihu Burritt, who served as the American Consul in Birmingham in 1862. As a result of the surrounding furnaces blowing smoke and dirt during the day and shining at night, he referred to the area as “black by day and red by night.”

Symbolic In Design and Colour

This flag is commonly flown on the 15th of July to celebrate Black Country Day. The colours black and red represent day and night, respectively. The flag’s background is consequently split between black and red, while the chains represent a characteristic regional export. The white circle in the middle depicts the glass cone, a symbol of the region’s glass-making history dating back to 1790.

The symbols the colours represent are:

Shipping & Delivery

Most UK mainland orders are shipped by next working day delivery courier (not guaranteed), or by Royal Mail 1st class post.

Orders placed before 1230pm on a working day will be processed and despatched the same day. Please note that during busier periods, this cannot be guaranteed. Royal Mail postage does not guarantee a delivery date. Orders needed for a specific date should use next day delivery courier (not guaranteed).

It is the sole responsibility of the purchaser to ensure all shipping details are correct. The next working day delivery is a Monday to Friday delivery service.

Saturday delivery may be available for a small surcharge. Orders placed after 1230pm on a Friday will be shipped Monday or Tuesday on bank holidays (we do not ship on weekends or bank holidays).
