The New Isle of Skye Flag Design

The new Isle of Skye flag has been designed by a very talented nine-year-old from the island, Calum Alasdair Munro. The blue, yellow and white design features a Birlinn – a wooden boat that was used during the Middle Ages around the island’s coast.

 

The boat contains five oars, which represent Skye’s five areas – Trotternish, Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish and Sleat.

 

369 people entered their flag designs to a competition organised by West Highland Free Press. Calum’s came out on top when it came to a public vote shortlisted by a judging panel, overseen by a flags expert. His was the definite favourite, winning more than 7000 votes from across the globe.

 

The winning design was revealed at a ceremony at the Nicolson Memorial in Portree, by Calum himself. He said: “I thought about the Celtic Heritage, the Viking heritage and the history of Flora MacDonald. In my flag, in the Birlinn, there are five oars representing Trotternish, Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish and Sleat. I thought about yellow for the MacLeod’s and Blue for the MacDonalds or the MacKinnons.”

 

Philip Tibbets, the Honorary Vexillologist Court of the Lord Lyon said:

“This Skye flag is a testament to engaging the creativity of the community itself. The design not only meets heraldic best practice but puts a unique and new spin on a traditional style – and in so doing combines the Scottish, Gàidhlig and Norse heritage of Skye.”

Shipping & Delivery

Most UK mainland orders are shipped by next working day delivery courier (not guaranteed), or by Royal Mail 1st class post.

Orders placed before 1230pm on a working day will be processed and despatched the same day. Please note that during busier periods, this cannot be guaranteed. Royal Mail postage does not guarantee a delivery date. Orders needed for a specific date should use next day delivery courier (not guaranteed).

It is the sole responsibility of the purchaser to ensure all shipping details are correct. The next working day delivery is a Monday to Friday delivery service.
