History of the Flag

The Sovereign and the United Kingdom are represented by the Royal Standard, although only the monarch can use them.

Upon marrying Philip II of Spain, Mary I impaled her arms with those of her husband: quartered gules a castle or (Castille), and argent a lion rampant gules (Leon). This marriage was seen as a symbol of unity between England and Spain, and the Royal Standard became a powerful symbol of this union.

The flag can be found in two distinct variations. Both are used across the United Kingdom, with one being reserved for Scotland and the other for England, Northern Ireland, Wales, the Crown dependencies, and the British Overseas Territories.

The flag is always displayed above the palace or official home of the king. If the monarch leaves, it must be taken down. When the king is in transit, the Royal Standard is also displayed on the front of their automobile, which is often a Bentley State Limousine.

The flag represents the monarch’s rule and can be used in official proceedings. You can use it at national celebration times and during a foreign head of state visit. When the monarch is in residence at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Standard is hoisted from its highest point.
