HISTORY OF THE NORTHUMBERLAND FLAG

Northumberland County Council has long used the Northumberland flag, but the origins of this flag to date back to the 7th century. When King and Saint, Oswald founded the kingdom of Northumbria. Historics believe that the design of the Northumberland flag was inspired by the banner used to commemorate St Oswald’s tomb. However, the Northumberland flag to date is not identical to that of St Oswald’s banner which has been described by historic as gold and purple where the Northumberland flag features bold red and yellow.

USAGE OF THE NORTHUMBERLAND FLAG

Perhaps the most common usage of the Northumberland flag is by the Northumberland County Council. The County Council had informally used elements of the Northumberland flag as a nod to this county’s rich history. In 1951 the flag was officially given an award of arms and was modified by the College of Arms to symbolise the interlocking stones of Hadrian’s Wall. This characteristic wall has long represented Northumberland as a border shire.

In 1995 the Council released the flag to the people of Northumberland allowing them to use the flag for general purposes. Flying this Northumberland windsock is a fun and creative way to celebrate the rich heritage of Northumberland.
