About the Sami Flag

We are now stocking the official flag of the Sámi people, one of the indigenous groups of people from the Nordic countries and the Kola Peninsula in Russia.

The flag carries the colours red, blue, yellow, and green. The colours are the most common ones you will see on traditional Sámi clothing. The red circle represents the sun, and the blue part of the circle symbolises the moon. The yellow and green are a nod to nature and animals.

This flag would be ideal for Sámi people who want to show pride in their heritage. It would also make an excellent gift for someone who appreciates the culture or collects flags.

History of the Sami Flag

Sápmi is the region traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people, taking up most of Northern Scandinavia.

The flag we know today was created in 1986 by Astrid Båhl, a Sámi artist from Norway. The original flag was relatively similar but without the green stripe and circle, instead consisting of a red and blue flag with a singular yellow bar separating them, off centre. It was created by Máret Stueng, a Sámi politician in 1962, and was never regarded as an official flag.

Båhl’s modern rendition of the flag gained official status in 2003, with its key differences being the green stripe and circle.
